Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) speaks at the 2023 Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California, U.S., May 1, 2023. Senator Joe Manchin, a maverick Democrat who has often bucked party leadership, told a radio station in his home state of West Virginia on Thursday that he is "thinking seriously" about leaving the party. "I'm not a Washington Democrat," Manchin said in the interview on Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval, a West Virginia Metro News show. July 26 (Reuters) - Mastercard (MA.N) has told financial institutions to stop allowing marijuana transactions on its debit cards, dealing a blow to an industry already on the fringes of the financial system in the United States. Most banks in the country do not service cannabis companies as marijuana remains illegal at the federal level despite several states legalizing its medicinal and recreational use. "The federal government considers cannabis sales illegal, so these purchases are not allowed on our systems," the spokesperson added. Sunburn Cannabis CEO Brady Cobb said in a statement that "this move is another blow to the state-legal cannabis industry and patients/consumers who want to access this budding category." The SAFE Banking Act is a crucial legislation that would make it easier for the cannabis industry to access banking services.

Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein are "hopeful" she'll return to the Senate next week, per a photograph of Schumer's notes. Feinstein hasn't voted in the Senate since mid-February, around the time of her shingles diagnosis. In her absence, Senate Democrats have faced difficulties confirming judges. With Feinstein absent from the Senate, Senate Republicans — along with Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin — voted 50-49 to roll back a Biden-era Environmental Protection Agency rule regarding pollution from trucks. Several prominent California Democrats have already declared to run for her seat, including Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter.

Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts told Insider that it was "not yet" time to declare the effort dead, pointing to ongoing discussions. "I support a stock ban for members of Congress," he told reporters in September.
Cannabis legalization is failing to live up to key promises, the economist Robin Goldstein said. While federal cannabis legalization is one of the few US policy questions where there's widespread polling consensus, the industry is struggling. The Blunt Realities of Cannabis Economics," Goldstein and Sumner take a microscope to cannabis policy and the broader industry to answer key questions about the drug's future. "If you want smaller businesses to thrive, just break down barriers to entry because those barriers are best met by the biggest companies," Goldstein said. High prices for legal cannabis often push customers to illicit sellers.
